About us
Get to know us.
Jenna Pollard (she/they) and Helen Prüfer (she/her) are the founders of Against The Grain, a FLINTA-led, queer-supportive networking organization aimed at education and consultation in timber framing.
Jenna built her first timber frame in 2010 and has been building and teaching ever since. She is based in Minnesota. Helen, who works with trees and grew up with German timber framing, is based in Berlin. Since their paths crossed, Jenna and Helen have joined forces.
They share a passion for encouraging anyone who desires to try out or excel in the trade of timber framing. They are committed to creating a safe space for all timber framers and want to create learning, community-building, and networking opportunities for anyone who has not been provided such an opportunity before, especially FLINTA individuals. (Don’t know what FLINTA is? Read below!)

Our Focus
At Against The Grain, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive community for all timber framers, with a special focus on FLINTA individuals.
Why FLINTA Matters
FLINTA stands for Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans, and Agender. The term is used for a broad group, highlighting the diverse identities and experiences of individuals often facing exclusion in traditional spaces, such as construction and the trades. The term FLINTA originated in Berlin as a way to describe safe spaces for those marginalized by patriarchal structures. By focusing on FLINTA, we aim to create a welcoming environment where everyone can thrive and excel in the craft of timber framing.
Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
We believe that diversity enriches the timber framing community. That’s exactly why we started Against The Grain. Our goal is to break down barriers and provide a platform where people can learn, grow, and connect with others who share their passion. We offer a range of workshops, courses, and events designed to empower and inspire timber framers of all skill levels. Excited? Us too!
